Buying new tech? Read this first!

Newtech3

It’s always the wrong time to buy technology, but some times are more wrong than others.

Trust me, I know – when I bought my first iPod a friend suggested waiting two weeks. I responded by buying it there and then. Sure enough, two weeks later a much improved iPod came out for the same price.

But there’s more! A couple of weeks ago I bought a new shiny, expensive MacBook Pro. This despite Apple’s big showcase event happening soon – I convinced myself new MacBooks wouldn’t feature. Boy was I wrong – the new ones have a number of improvements for the same price I paid for my (now outdated) one.

Much anguish followed! So to spare you all a similar fate, here are a few timely tips if you’re in the market for gadgetry.

Buying a new Windows PC

If you can, definitely wait a few weeks. Current PCs are running on Windows Vista – but Windows Seven will be released here in late October. You won’t have to wait that long because an upgrade program is coming soon that will let you receive a free comparable version of Seven once it’s released, if you buy a PC from a specified date.

Details are still vague – Microsoft NZ says more info will be coming “in a few weeks”. My bet is early July. so if you can, wait. You don’t want to be stuck with Vista and have to pay for Seven.

Buying a MacBook

Funnily enough, now is a good time to buy a new Mac computer (sigh). The line has just been refreshed, so if you can justify the exorbitant prices, go for it!

Upgrades include an SD card port (handy for transferring images from a camera), more RAM and an improved screen.

Buying an iPhone

Do not buy an iPhone now! New models will be released in weeks. Vodafone hasn’t made any announcement yet – and in the meantime, it’s keeping the old models on its website at the same prices. Definitely wait until the new ones arrive at what will probably be similar prices.

Are you looking at buying any other products and wondering if it’s good timing? Post below and I’ll try to help ferret out information!

And I’d love to hear any stories you might have about awful timing – misery loves company…

I have heard that Telecom are in talks with Apple about the possibility of securing the iPhone for their XT network. Do you know anything about this? I am keen to get an iPhone but need the Telecom network as there is no Vodafone coverage at home....

I bought an HP dv7 with Vista, then found out I can get a free upgrade to Win7. I've gone and ordered the new operating system, but on reading about it, it seems there are certain 'teething problems' at the moment. Should I go ahead with the upgrade, or would it be worth my while to wait a while?

Hi there,
iPhones: The pre-Xmas deals are all happening at the moment is that because there are new models due out very soon or is the normal iPhone selling frenzey?
I'm new to this market and I'm contemplating buying for my new business to easily keep in touch with customers and my email inbox while away around the country and overseas.

Any tips will be gratefully appreciated - cheers, Chris
